Welcome to our 2008 season!
We have a new spacious CBD venue with great food and wine!

Date: Monday 7th April, 7pm start
Speaker: Dr Karen Jones (Melbourne University)
Topic: Philosophy of Emotions: Trust
According to the traditional picture, emotions are alien forces that overwhelm us, disrupt clear thinking, and make us act against our better judgment. They are "sand in the machinery of action" (Elster). This negative view is challenged by a growing body of empirical and philosophical work that sees emotions as clever design solutions for finite minds that need to react fast in an uncertain and dangerous world.
Focusing on trust as a case study, I argue that emotions can enable us to navigate quickly and effectively in complex social worlds. Old ideals that disparage the emotions and urge their control may need to be replaced with norms enjoining us to think with all the capacities of the human mind, including emotion, as well as intellect.

Date: Monday 5th May, 7pm start
Speaker: Dr Simon Keller (Boston University & CAPPE)
Topic: My family, my country, my species, my coffee cup: to what things should I be loyal?
The question for the talk is: to what things should we loyal?
In some cases, loyalty is moral duty; you should be loyal to your children, for example. In other cases, loyalty is absurd; you should not be loyal to your beer glass, or to the class of people whose surnames start with the same letter as yours, or to your bank. What could make a loyalty morally obligatory, and what could make a loyalty absurd? And what do the answers to these questions tell us about tougher loyalties, like loyalty to a country?

Date: Monday 2nd June, 7pm start
Speaker: Associate Professor Dr Jeanette Kennett (Australian National University)
Topic: What's the Buzz? Undercover marketing and the corruption of relationships
Undercover marketing targets potential customers by concealing the commercial nature of an apparently social transaction. In typical cases a product is promoted by someone – a stranger, workmate, or a friend – under the guise of ordinary chitchat, when in fact this person is acting as an agent for the advertising firm. The success of these practices depends on imparting an advertising message to a potential consumer without the consumer recognising that this message has come to them as a piece of advertising. I argue that the spread of these practices undermines important social relations such as friendship and corrupts those who take part in them.

Date: Monday 7th July, 7pm start
Speaker: Professor Mark Colyvan (University of Sydney)
Topic: The Mating Game: A Philosopher Looks at Mating and Dating
Why do people stay together in monogamous relationships? Love? Fear? Habit? Ethics? Integrity? Desperation? In this talk Professor Mark Colyvan will consider a rather surprising answer! It turns out that co-operative behaviour, like mutually faithful marriages, can be given a firm basis by game theory.
We will look at the philosophical upshot of such an answer to our question and see if it really does deliver what is required.
The focus of the talk will be on the philosophical understanding of the co-operative behaviour in question and will not involve, or presuppose, any mathematics.
